Why Explanations Lie: Idealization in Explanation

چکیده

On the causal approach to explanation, explaining a phenomenon is telling the actual causal story as to why it occurs. Science is full of idealizing explanations that deliberately falsify the relevant causal story. Therefore, either (a) the causal approach to explanation is mistaken, or (b) idealizing explanations, however convenient, are deeply flawed. Correct? I don’t think so. I show that on an enlightened causal account of explanation, idealization is not merely tolerable; done right, it enhances the explanatory power of a causal model. This paper is based on chapter 8 of Strevens (2008).

Optimal Acquisition: Why Children’s Language Production Can Exceed Their Comprehension

This paper discusses a developmental paradox, namely that children’s performance in language production sometimes exceeds their performance in language comprehension. This yields a puzzle for most theories of language acquisition. If a child produces a linguistic form correctly, this is considered to be evidence that the child possesses the relevant grammatical knowledge. However, if the child ...

Models of Scientific Explanation

EXPLANATION Explanation of why things happen is one of humans' most important cognitive operations. In everyday life, people are continually generating explanations of why other people behave the way they do, why they get sick, why computers or cars are not working properly, and of many other puzzling occurrences. More systematically, scientists develop theories to provide general explanations ...

For special issue of Synthese on Modeling, Idealization and Representation Explaining Features of Fine-Grained Phenomena Using Abstract Analyses of Phenomena and Mechanisms: Two Examples from Chronobiology

Explanations of biological phenomena such as cell division, protein synthesis or circadian rhythms commonly take the form of models of the responsible mechanisms. Recently philosophers of science have attempted to analyze this practice, presenting mechanisms as organized collections of parts performing operations that together produce the phenomenon. But in some cases what researchers seek to e...

Why Is There Universal Macro-Behavior? Renormalization Group Explanation As Non-causal Explanation

Renormalization group (RG) methods are an established strategy to explain how it is possible that microscopically different systems exhibit virtually the same macro behavior when undergoing phase-transitions. I argue – in agreement with Robert Batterman – that RG explanations are non-causal explanations. However, Batterman misidentifies the reason why RG explanations are non-causal: it is not t...
